Day 4 – 7. February 26 – March 1, 2025 (Wednesday – Saturday). Ennedi Plateau
We are in the Ennedi – natural and Cultural Reserve, nestled in the north-east of Chad, is a natural masterpiece of sandstone of 40,000 km², sculpted over the centuries by wind and water, creating a magnificent landscape marked by cliffs, canyons and natural arches. The permanent presence of water in this desert landscape has created a paradise in the Sahara, supporting flora and fauna as well as human life. Thousands of images have been painted and sculpted into the rock surface, constituting one of the largest and most significant rock art ensembles in the Sahara and for the planet.
We have on site private 4x4 vehicles enough to accommodate 3 of us in each car with a comfort.
We will also have the possibility of going for walks on foot or on the camelbacks.
Within these 4 days we will be taking car tours to different parts of Ennedi Plateau and discover the following most impressive things:
Guelta Archei
The highlight of these few days in undoubtedly the Guelta d'Archei, the only permanent waterhole
in the region situated amidst a dramatic and towering gorge, where one can often see hundreds of
camels drinking, their bellowing echoing around the rock walls. The guelta is also home to one of
the last populations of Saharan crocodiles (the last female species of disappearing crocodiles)..
We have trekking (takes up to 4-5 hours) to grandiose Archei Guelta – surprise habitat of the last crocodiles of the desert, and with a bit of luck we should be able to see them. Explore this real cathedral of sandstone sculpted according to the whims of water and wind. Archei has the merit of the circus, grandiose and spectacular! Daily by 10-11 am lots of camels gather together in the guelta, the best time for photography.
Aloba Arch, Elephant Arch and Triple arch
In the eastern part of the plateau, we find the huge Aloba arch with a Martian surroundings. In Aloba we will see the largest arch in the world with an estimated opening of 120 m high and 77 m wide.
In the plains where ostriches and gazelles graze, we will explore the Triple Arch. This cliff has a unique form shaping as medieval gallery arcade. In this part of plateau we admire with the work of nature, finding also the rock called Bottle of Champagne.
The Elephant Arch, one of the most impressive arches on the Plateau, indeed resembles an elephant with a trunk, and can be found nearby our lodge.
Labyrinth Oyu and others
We discover the small and big labyrinths of Ennedi – impressive Labyrinth de Gaulle (also known as Oyu), a crazy work of unknown artists. Labyrinths and corridors rich in caves where thousands of paintings are hidden.
Arco Djulia and Bachikele guelta
In the extreme northern part of the plateau we will see another true natural masterpiece – the most smashing arch – Arco Djoulia with very high and thinnest walls. Here we also take a walk walk along the Bachikele guelta, where at the right season we can find some water squeezed by the canyon walls.
Rupestrian rock paintings
Terkei – the gateway to the Ennedi, where we explore open air museum of the Rupestrian paintings – one of the most impressive petroglyphs in Africa, situated in the caves.
Discover Manda Gueli cave surrounded by some small sand dunes, famous for another impressive set of prehistoric rock paintings.
Mushroom plateau
On the edge of the plateau locates one of the most impressive places of Ennedi – the Eye Glasses cliff surrounded with the Mushrooms plateau. Many rock made mushrooms are scattered in the area facing another labyrinth. This red sandstone massif has been sculpted into a multitude of fascinating rock formations by the wind and sand over the millennia.
Guran people
Ennedi Plateau is also nomads with their cattle. We visit the Tokou and other water wells en route, where closer to midday many animals gather together herded by the nomadic Guran people. Guran are those who settle only the plateau of Ennedi. These people gave the name to Ennedi Plataue. Among the deserted plains this plateau looks outstanding. In Guran language "Ennedi" means "something new".
We will be exploring these and other extraterrestrial places with arches, canyons and labyrinths and spend every evening around the fire, where you can live a unique experience in this paradise which is the Ennedi.
