Day 3-4. August 10-11, 2024 (Saturday, Sunday). Matveev Island and the mysterious island of Vaigach
Anchoring at the first point of our landing - the bay of Matveev Island. On the small island, we will see an old lighthouse that you can climb, ancient Pomor crosses, which served as a means of polar navigation and one of the largest in the region rwalrus rookery, where dozens of these terrible, but lovely Arctic residents peacefully rest on the shore or frolic in the water nearby. Walruses may seem good-natured, fearful and clumsy, but do not forget that it is a wild animal in its territory. We're watching from a safe distance.
After Matveev Island we move further, towards Vaigach Island, which is an archipelago. There will be many landings and the first of them - in the bay of Lyamchina, on the shore of which stands the house of old nenets Andrei Volko. Andrei has been living here for many years as a hermit and "looks after" Semilikiy Idol.
It is the only "sacred island" of the indigenous peoples of the North where people have built sanctuaries to worship their deities, because according to old beliefs, it was the spirits who helped to survive the harsh Arctic conditions. In such sanctuaries wooden ritual statues - idols - were placed , which were sacrificed. One of these sacred Nenets symbols, the Semilikiy Idol, was installed on the Bolshoy Cinkoviy island, where we will go.
One of the most beautiful places of our landing is the canyon of the Talata River. It is amazing how a place with such a deep, rocky gorge on an island with a fairly calm relief can exist.
Depending on the weather and time, we will also visit the "Pakhtusov" bay, where there another hermit - Vasily lives and the peninsula Lyamchin, where you can also observe the walrus.
Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation: Peter I yacht
Day 5-6. August 12-13, 2024 (Monday, Tuesday). Kara Gate Strait- Novaya Zemlya
It's time to go in search of the white bears. Our first landing is the Rusanov peninsula. From a distance, it may seem that Novaya Zemlya is an inhospitable, rugged shore, above which hangs a rainy grey sky. But if you come closer and step on this earth, the true beauty of the Arctic Circle will be revealed. Soft tundra mosses and lichens, pure streams, stone terraces and ledges, delicate aroma of northern flowers.
During the day, we land in the Rusanovo settlement - a factory, whose inhabitants were engaged in the fishing of beluga, seals, walruses, the collection of gaga down. Several buildings and boats remain on the shore.
We slowly ply the bays and skerries, carefully winding the shoreline with binoculars in search of moving white fur ball. We make some more landings on the southern tip of the archipelago, in an abundance of northern animals: deer, wild birds. Walk carefully - literally under your feet can be clutches of eggs and brood of chicks.
In the evening, we go back to the mouth of the Pechora river.
